The Sport Guildford Awards is the annual celebration of sport in Guildford and an opportunity to shine a light on Guildford’s sporting community. The 14 award categories recognise the outstanding commitment and achievements of individuals, clubs, coaches, volunteers, schools and community groups towards sport in Guildford in the last year. There were two new awards this year; the Active Community Project of the Year and the Active School Innovation of the Year, which recognised local organisations, projects and schools who provided opportunities to increase activity levels and reduce barriers to participation in sport and physical activity, enabling residents and pupils to get active and stay active. This year’s award ceremony was held at the prestigious new Guildford Cricket Pavilion. Kalm Kitchen provided the refreshments for the evening and Eagle Radio presenter ‘Breakfast Bev’ hosted the evening. Nominees and winners were inspired by a motivational speech and video, presented by our home-grown reigning Olympic and World champion, Liam Heath MBE. Liam highlighted his journey to Olympic success and talked of the determination required and support he has received from all levels of his sport. All nominees and winners were also given the opportunity to have their photograph taken with Liam, with his Olympic medals. Peter O’Connell, Director of Environment at Guildford Borough Council says: “We were thrilled to see so many people from Guildford’s sporting community join us at the awards evening. This year, Guildford has had some incredible sporting successes and some amazing new facilities. Participation in sport at all levels, is so important for the health and wellbeing of our community.
