Explore Guildford this Summer with The Guildford Town Guides
A small band of enthusiastic volunteers, The Guildford Town Guides lead walking tours in Guildford town centre. Each year they take thousands of people, adults and children on guided walks exploring a variety of themes.
As they enter their busiest period of the year, we caught up with Howard Barratt to find out a bit more about what it’s like to be a Town Guide:
1. How long have you been involved with the Guildford Town Guides?
I started a Guildford History course in September 2019 and became a Town guide in 2020,Tessa is our longest serving guide with over 20 years experience.
2. What interested you most about the Town Guides?
I have always enjoyed history and love Guildford as it has a lot of character which has been preserved.
3. Which is your favourite of the current walks on offer?
My favourite walk is The Guildford Story which is our most popular as it gives the highlights of Guildford bringing people and buildings together. I also enjoy The Market Walk which covers markets from Saxon times to present day, I have a keen interest in food as I was a Senior Food Buyer for Marks and Spencer before I retired.
4. Top fact about Guildford?
Our 3 Lions for Guildford are King John, Lewis Carroll and Alan Turing
5. Favourite hidden gem (building, architectural feature, garden, other place of note/interest)?
The Guildhall opposite Tunsgate. The building has been a Court and Council Chamber in the past and has some great internal wood panelling and other artefacts. I also love standing at the top of the High Street looking towards the green fields, there are not many High Streets in England with that view!
Head to their website for more information about what they do and details of all upcoming walks. You will also find information on how to become a town guide yourself.
Walks are free but must be booked in advance.
